Jill Scott is the only daughter from her mom Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia the state of Pennsylvania on the 4th of April, 1972. She was raised by her grandmother and she was an only child. Scott graduated from The Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. She took secondary school classes there while working two jobs. She hoped to be a English teacher at the high school level. This dream was however cut short when after three years of studies and as a teachers aide she dropped out of college. She started her career doing live performances of poems as well as her own work. She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson, a part of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. Then, during Roots' show she came out as an artist. Then, she began collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She also gained experience on stage as she appeared in the Canada tour of the Broadway the musical Rent. She signed as the label's first artist.
